The sun shone on Wincanton as we welcomed over 180 people to our Wild & Green Community Fair on Saturday.
An evolution of last year’s Elements Climate Fair, the purpose of the event was to provide inspiration for anyone who wants to find out how they can play their part, through collective community action, in addressing the biodiversity and climate crises.
Families were able to learn from organisations such as Somerset Wildlife Trust, who were seeking feedback on their draft Beaver Management Strategy for the county, and from our sister charity, the Growing Space, whose wildlife trail around the grounds provided inspiration for turning a garden into a domestic nature reserve.
The women from Lynne Franks’ SEED Tribe brought music, magic, stories and play in their fun and colourful takeover of the Orchard, while the volunteers from CATCH (Community Action to Transform Cale Habitat) showed us the surprising amount of wildlife living in the Balsam Centre pond through their hugely popular pond dipping sessions.
Repair and reuse were important themes of the fair, with Defashion Dorset offering advice on upcycling clothes and visible mending; One Planet Wincanton hosting a plant swap; and Somerset Council’s Fixy van holding a tech amnesty for items such as mobile phones, tablets and laptops.
Our warmest thanks to the following organisations for participating in the event, and to everyone who came along. Same time next year?
